AVEIRO CITY
Its name derives from the latin Alavário, which literally means “the gathering place of birds”. For a long period Aveiro was important economic link in the production of salt and commercial shipping. It was a centre of salt exploration by the Romans and trade. The Moors invaded and then held it until the 11th century, after which it became popular with Portuguese royalty
If you talk with locals of Aveiro you may heard a lot of time that the city is called “The Portuguese Venice”, because of its water canals and traditional boats (moliceiros) that resemble the Italian city Venice.
Literally meaning “soft eggs from Aveiro”, a region in northern Portugal, the Ovos Moles de Aveiro are almost every Portuguese’s guilty pleasure.
Like the Pastéis de Nata, they were born out of the excess yolk leftover from starching the clothes at the Jesus de Aveiro Monastery, who used the yolk to make these sweets – made solely out of eggs and sugar, wrapped in a thin film of sugar syrup, and made to take the shape of various sea-related elements, like a seashell, conch or even fish.
